Before paper was invented in ancient China, bamboo and wooden slips were used for writing, which were generally called "Jiandu". The materials were first adopted during the Yin and Shang dynasties, and were not popularized until the Warring States Period.

There were inventions of bamboo slips in the Warring States Period as well as the Qin and Han Dynasties in history, which have recorded vast contents of sutra, biography, laws and decrees, letters and writs, calendar etc. From it we can see the importance of bamboo and wooden slips in the development and propagation of ancient Chinese culture.
