The South-Pointing Chariot is a kind of direction-indicating vehicle in ancient China, which was put into application in as early as the Spring and Autumn and Warring States Periods. It was first adopted in battles and then as the emperors' ritual vehicle. It can tell direction through its gear transmission system and engaging and disengaging gear. In certain conditions, the wooden dummy equipped on the chariot remains pointing to the south regardless of changes of direction. This is a full embodiment of the excellence of our mechanical skills in ancient China. |
