The Suzhou Star Chart is an early extant large-scale inscribed stone star chart acquired through field observation in the world. It is drawn by Huang Shang in about the first year of Shaoxi in the Southern Song Dynasty (1190) according to the result of measurement on star position. Huang Shang, who was entrusted by Guangzong of the Song Dynasty as his son's tutor, created the chart for his teaching work. Afterwards, Wang Zhiyuan carved it into a stele in 1247 A.D. in the Southern Song Dynasty, which is now preserved in Suzhou Museum of Inscribed Steles. |
