For Paiwan people of the Gaoshan ethnic minority, drinking from two cups joined together is not just for the bride and bridegroom on the wedding, it's also performed between family members, friends and relatives. The two cups are joined together on something shaped like a "carrying pole", which is carved with wood and decorated with color paintings. A cup is carved on each end of the pole. When drinking, two people stand shoulder to shoulder and hold the handle of each wine-filled cup with the hand on the outer side, then raise the cups at the same time and drink together; otherwise, the wine will be spilt. In this drinking custom, holding the two cups at the same level symbolizes equality, and emptying the wine, whether it's sweet or bitter, symbolizes sharing joys and sorrows. |
