Flower stands (huaji), also called huajia (flower shelves) or huatai (flower plat?form), did not appear until very late in the Qing period. Some people believe that the flower stand only existed in paintings because the paintings which depict them date to much earlier than the actual objects. Judging by the material and workmanship, most examples were made during the late Qing period, and it is very likely that these were based on examples illustrated in paintings. The two flower stands illustrated in this book were made in the late nineteenth or early twentieth century.
