In the bygone days when in slack season there were temple fairs or happy events, peasants in many places of China would form into groups to sing native folk songs while beating drums or gongs to keep accompaniment. Some, good at singing and dancing, would go out and sing for a living; they then became folk artists. These people were capable of various performing skills, telling stories, playing musical instruments, singing, and so on; they spoke in different dialects and learnt different opera types and singing styles from different masters. Quite a few outstanding folk artists gained popularity among the public and got their name heard by later generations.
